If you’ve always wanted to play PS2 games on PC, that’s a warranted desire since the PlayStation 2 is undoubtedly the most famous console of all time. Many called it the king of the consoles in the previous generation, and rightly so, as Sony has managed to sell over 150 million units of these babies as of January 31, 2011, making it a full 11 years since the console was launched in 2000. As you would expect from the best selling console of all time, emulation of the PS2 has been a rough ride and developers have spent over 5 years on the project, which made PS2 emulation the holy grail in emulation circles.
However, with recent developments in technology and some humongous effort on part of the developers, you are now able to play PS2 games on PC (almost all, in fact) with little to no hiccups and at a fairly decent speed, depending on the PC you are using, with an emulator called PCSX2. Here is a step-by-step guide illustrating how to play PS2 games on PC.

Play PlayStation 2 Games On PC – What will you need?

1. A fairly decent PC configuration, with a recommended rig consisting of at least a Core2Duo Processor, upwards of 2 GB of RAM and a graphics card at or better than the GeForce 8000 or 9000 series or the ATI equivalent.
2. PlayStation 2 BIOS files, which you can find all over the internet with a simple Google search or dump them right from your or your friend’s trusty old PS2.
3. The latest version of the PCSX2 emulator available here.
4. Latest plugins, available here.
5. A copy of the game you want to play on DVD or in ISO format.
6. Joypad or joystick (optional)
7. Intermediate level PC skills and some luck (the latter is optional).

Play PS2 Games On PC – Getting Started

After you’re done downloading and installing the emulator, you will be presented with a configuration wizard to help you configure it easier so we’ll first go through that. First, simply select the language and choose the directory where you want to install the emulator.

You will now be presented with the graphics, sounds and various other plugins that you are gong to need in order to get the job done. Check the versions of the plugins carefully and go to the above link to download the latest versions in case you’re lagging behind. For the GS plugin, select the one with SSE2 in its name in case you’re using an older generation processor, but unless you’re using ancient tech, select the SSE4 version from the drop down menu.

Next, select the BIOS USA or Europe BIOS version that you just downloaded or dumped. You can uncheck the “Use default setting” checkbox at the bottom and select a folder of your choice by clicking Browse. The Japanese BIOS works fine in most cases, but is known to produce some problems, so we’re skipping it here as the USA and Europe BIOS have the highest compatibility ratio.

Finish up the configuration wizard and you will now be presented with the main interface of PCSX2, which has undergone a severe overhaul in order to increase ease of use and user friendliness. I found this version of the emulator much more easier to configure and use mostly because of the increased compatibility with almost all famous games and a much cleaner and less cluttered plugin configuration interface.

More Configurations Needed To Play PlayStation 2 Games on PC

Now, the default settings should be fine for most tinkerers, but if you to play PS2 games on your PC at the full 60 frames per second, you are going to have to delve deeper to make some changes.

GS Plugin

GSdx v0.1.16 is a DirectX 9 and DirectX 10/11 plugin that recently recently received a great improvement in both speed and image quality. It requires pixel shaders 2 and SSE2 to work and Vista/Windows 7 with a DirectX 10 compliant graphics card for the DirectX10/11 mode.

Select the Direct X 9 mode if your graphics card is not fully compatible with Direct X 10, but both modes should be fine and provide you a with fairly accurate representation of colors and graphics on the PS2. The native resolution mode should be selected if you want the plugin to closely mimic the capabilities of the PS2, reducing lags and most importantly giving you accurate emulation of the console. But if accuracy is not your priority, you can select higher resolutions, depending on your monitor and graphics card.

Sound

SPU2-X is the latest and greatest sound plugin at the time of this write up. It is also the most advanced in emulating the chip correctly and many games, such as the God of War series, only work with SPU2-X.

If you have a fast computer and want the best audio quality possible, select the Catmull option from the Interpolation drop down menu, otherwise linear interpolation remains the best and fastest option available to emulate the sound of the PS2 system. Other settings should be left at their recommended and original spots unless you get in-game errors, in which case, the only option is to try and test all possible settings for a fix.

Keyboard/Joypad Plugin

The Lilypad plugin has undergone yet another overhaul and is now much more compatible with third-party joypads and joysticks, and at the same time perfectly mimics the feel of the movements on the PS2 console, even adding custom vibration options to emulate the PS2′s excellent Dual Shock vibration system.

Just select the Pad 1 tab to configure your keyboard or joypad/joystick. The plugin’s interface is intuitive and self explanatory, and should not require much expertise to set up.

DVD ROM Plugin

The Gigaherz plugin is the perfect tool for this job as it can load games from both the DVD-ROM drive and from ISO files as well. No configuration is necessary for the plugin. Just make sure you selected it in the Wizard process I mentioned in the start. If not, just open up the Plugin/BIOS selector from the main interface and select the plugin.

Emulation Settings Required To Play PS2 Games On PC

Those breathing a sigh of relief should stop immediately. We’re not done with all the configurations yet, because even though the emulator has undergone a complete overhaul, emulating the PlayStation 2 is not as easy as emulating Nintendo’s Wii. But fret not, we’re not far from our final goal. Open up the emulation settings from the main interface and get cracking on the final phase of the configurations.
Mess around with the EE/IOP setting only if you’re a tech wizard. The only thing you will want to know here is that the Clamping Mode produces more accurate results on Full and faster results on the Normal setting. The None setting is known to cause bugs and should be avoided like the plague.

Clamping Mode settings mentioned above also apply in VUs. You can select the legacy recompilers only if you feel like a dare devil, because even though they produce better speeds, they’re also notorious for messing up games.

Nothing to see in GS except the infamous frame skipping and turbo options folks. Frame skipping definitely is not recommended, unless you want your game to start acting crazy, but Turbo is known to produce big speed ups in some games, so give it a try and check out if it works for you.

GSWindow just provides some scaling and resolution options in addition to the GS plugin’s own interface. Stick to the norm if you don’t know what you’re doing, but advanced users can select resolutions that will work the best with their PCs.

Speed hacks provide some much needed improvement in game speeds, but at the cost of accuracy. The best method is to check out the settings that work the best for you according to the speed of your PC and find a compromise between speed and accuracy. As always, stick with the recommended/default settings if you don’t know what you’re doing, but I definitely recommend enabling this feature.

Don’t touch the game fixes section unless a game is particularly being tough to run, because PCSX2 now uses its built-in game fixing methods to automatically apply changes to the game being emulated.

Play PS2 Games On PC – Running the game

Just select the appropriate boot option from the system menu in the main interface – full if you want to see the pretty start up animations of the PS2 and fast if you want to skip all the formalities and get to emulating. That’s it! You are now finally able to play PS2 games on your PC.

To see which games are compatible at the moment, check out this compatibility list maintained by the developers. As the emulator is still a work in progress, it is always possible that your favorite game might not run on the current version, but the developers are rolling out releases as soon as the find fixes to games and come up with new features, so fret not as your favorite game might be the next one on the emulation scene.

First of all a warning. Many of you will not be able to run these games properly. They’ll lag on a lot of PC’s. On some of them they’ll lag even more. When emulating PlayStation 2 and Xbox games, you always have to keep in mind the next equasion:
To remove the above mentioned ‘-1‘ factor, you can pay more attention to the specific type of game you’re trying to play. Naturally, visually simple games like ‘Disgaea’ will run smoother than 3D, over the top graphical shooters, like ‘Black’. In short, your computer will never completely be a PlayStation 2.
We’ll be guiding you through this process in a few simple steps.

Step 1 – Download and install PCSX2

PCSX2 comes in two packages. A binary package (which you have to un7zip) and an installation file. Just install or extract it to the folder of your choice.

Step 2 – Getting the BIOS files

Contrary to the first PlayStation, the PlayStation 2 uses several BIOS files. Basically, these are the hardest to find. Because they are copyrighted material, you are only allowed to own these files if you also own a PlayStation 2. MakeUseOf does NOT encourage piracy! This is also the reason why it’s illegal to host these files online. If you actually own a PlayStation 2 though, it’s not illegal to download them (laws may differ in your country).
So now you basically have two options layed out for you. You can either dump them from your PlayStation 2 yourself, or find someone else who dumped them and who put the files online. On this last website you can find the ROM1, eROM and the SECAM-, NTSC- and PAL BIOS files you’ll need. Again, you must’nt download them if you don’t have a PlayStation 2. You can put these files in a folder of you’re choice.

Step 3 – Running PCSX2 and configuring BIOS, video and controller input

The program comes in two different versions. One version uses TLB (pcsx2t.exe), the other one Virtual Memory (pcsx2.exe). First of all, try running the VM version. The program will try to reallocate the memory, after which you have to log off and on again. If it fails to do so, you’ll have to use the TLB version. This one is somewhat slower, but according to the developers the speed difference is not that great.
After you’ve started up, select ‘Config’ -> ‘Configure’.
First, we’re going to configure our BIOS. Press ‘Set Bios Directory’ and select the folder where you’ve put your BIOS files. Back in the Configuration screen, select the correct region from the Bios drop-down menu. You might want to change this now and then, depending on your games.

Next, the video plug-ins. PCSX2 comes with ZeroGS KOSMOS and GSdx9 plug-ins. A ‘Ps2 Output’ window (which looks similar to the command screen) normally opened when you started PCSX2. Else, temporarily close the Configuration screen, select ‘Misc’ -> ‘Enable Console’ and restart the program. In this Ps2 Output screen, look if ‘Detected SSE2′ is stated under Features. If not, you might want to choose the ‘no SSE2′ video plug-in.

If you press the ‘Configure…’ button under the video drop-down menu, you can tweak graphic related options like screen size, toggle full-screen, anti-aliasing and more.
As for the controller, I highly recommend LilyPad. This is one of the most adjustable plug-ins. You can use keyboard, mouse and controller input. There even is a setting so you can use your Guitar Hero guitar.
Just download it here, and drop it in the plugins directory. If you’ve used the installer, that would be C:\Program Files\Pcsx2_0.9.4\plugins .
Re-open the Configuration screen, select LilyPad from the drop-down menu and press configure. In the ‘General’ tab, you can tweak various settings. Select the ‘Pad 1′ or ‘Pad 2′ tab to configure the keys.

Step 4 – Test-driving and alternative plug-ins

With everything set up, it’s about time for a test-drive. We’re going to look if everything works as it should, and look which points need more improvement.
We can boot the games, depending on the plug-in we use, either by CD/DVD or by using an image file. The standard configuration uses Linuzappz, which is able to boot ISO’s and other image files. To do this, just select ‘File’ -> ‘Run CD/DVD’.
If you want to boot from a disc instead, go back to the configuration screen and select the P.E.Op.S driver from the Cdvdrom dropdown menu. Press configure to select an interface (based on your operating system) and the drive you want to use. Confirm your configuration and you’re ready to roll. Select ‘File’ -> ‘Run CD/DVD’ to boot from the chosen drive.

At this point you’ll be prompted for a date and a timezone, after which the game will start. If you’ve got problems with the graphics or sound, try using one of the the other plug-ins. You can get more additional plug-ins here.

If your system hangs about 2 or 3 minutes at startup, where you can't access the Start button or the Taskbar, it may be due to one specific service (Background Intelligent Transfer) running in the background. Microsoft put out a patch for this but it didn't work for me. Here's what you do: Click on Start/Run, type 'msconfig', then click 'OK'. Go to the 'Services' tab, find the 'Background Intelligent Transfer' service. Disable it, apply the changes & reboot.

Many people use BIOS password to lock up their
computers, making them completely unusable
without entering the correct password. This
password has to be entered before loading the
operating systems, normally on a DOS screen
shortly after the computer started. BIOS password
is usually stored together with other BIOS settings
such as the time, date and size of the hard disk.
These pieces of data are usually stored in a flash
chip on the motherboard.
To reset or remove BIOS password, look for a
jumper which usually can be found near the
processor or BIOS battery on the motherboard.
After locating the jumper (usually with a label -
PSWD beside it), move the jumper from
connected pins 1+2 to pins 2+3 for a few
seconds or so, then move back to pins 1+2. This
will reset the entire BIOS settings. The next time
you boot your computer, the BIOS will show you
the default factory settings and from there you
can optionally set a new password.
Here are the Commands :

Type q
By Putting this commands your Machine's Bios
has been reset. Now restart your computer and
everything should run just fine.
Another alternative way to completely reset
your bios setting is to reinsert the CMOS battery
which can be found on the motherboard. The
CMOS battery provides power supply to the
motherboard in order to hold the BIOS settings
data.

Windows XP contain a number of
predetermined power plans, which control
settings like how rapidly your laptop turns off
and when your screen saver boots in. You can
change your laptop power scheme by choosing
Control Panel Power Options. For max. Battery
life from the "Power scheme" chooses the
option "Max. Battery" and decline the list.
There are good choices for you just like "Low
Power Mode" and Portable /Laptop. They don't
conserve as much power as Max Battery. After
selecting a power scheme you click Ok button
to finish the process.

2. Clear the 'Display Delete Confirmation

2. Click the 'Write files/folders to disc' button.

Note: This is basically the same as switching the 'Mode' to 'Build' and setting 'Output' to 'Device'.

3. Insert a blank (or erasable) DVD disc in your burner.

Note: The message in the status bar should now say something along the lines of 'Ready'.

4. Add the installation source folder to the 'Source' box.

Set the 'Emulation Type' to 'None (Custom)'.

Point the 'Boot Image' to the 'etfsboot.com' file within the 'boot' folder in your source folder - i.e. "T:\VISTA_INSTALL\boot\etfsboot.com"

Enter 'Microsoft Corporation' in the 'Developer ID' field.

Enter '07C0' in the 'Load Segment' field.

Enter '4' in the 'Sectors To Load' field if your etfsboot.com file is 2K in size, enter '8' if it's 4K. (Basically it's the size of the file in bytes divided by 512 - i.e. 2048 / 512 = 4)

Note: Vista's is normally 2KB and Windows 7's is 4KB... so enter '4' if you're building a Vista OS installation disc and '8' if you're building a Windows 7 OS installation disc.



7. Now we're ready to burn so click the big 'Build' button!



8. Assuming your source folder is in order (i.e. it contains a 'sources' folder with an 'install.wim' file in it) and depending on your current settings, the program will prompt to correct certain things so they match (as closely as possible) an official Microsoft disc/image.

Click 'Yes' to whatever it says needs correcting - these settings have been tried and tested so we know they work!



9. When prompted, give the disc a name and click the 'Yes' button.



10. You'll then be presented with one final 'information' screen before the program starts to burn the disc.

Double check everything looks roughly as it does below and then click 'OK'.
